Patent: Canon EF-S 16-80mm

Canon has registered a new patent for a 16-80mm lens for APS-C DSLR cameras, the EF-S 16-80mm f/2-5.6, look out for this lens being bundled with some of Canon’s higher end APS-C cameras in the future. Check out the patent details below as translated by google:

What’s strange about this patent is the f/6 aperture at the tele end of the zoom scale in the patent. It’s possible that this will turn out to to be f/5.6 because f/6 doesn’t exist on a camera, and f/6.3 would be incredibly slow. This would make it a replacement for the EF-S 17-85 f/2.8-5.6. Perhaps even the f/2 will turn out to be f/2.8 as well… it’s tough to judge these patents sometimes!
