LEAKED: DJI Mavic – A New Foldable Drone
On August 15th DJI trademarked the name “Mavic” and since then there has been a trickle of information filtering through various online forums about an entirely new kind of drone.
Piecing all these tidbits together, here’s where we currently stand:
The Mavic is going to be a 4k capable compact, foldable drone with a 2-axis gimbal installed inside a protective dome on the front of the quadcopter. The usual 4 arms of the drone all fold in towards the body, leaving a remarkably compact looking piece of kit. As a Phantom 3 Pro owner myself, I can tell you how much a more compact design would be appreciated!
- September 27th launch date
- 4K Camera
- 2 axis gimbal
- 300m (984 feet) ofdm digital wifi link
- foldable design for transport
- 650gram (1.43 lbs) weight
- Transmitter will be an all-in-one
- Android-based OS with integrated LCD Display
- 3S 3830mAh 11.1v battery
Initial reports placed the launch date as September 15th, just 4 days before GoPro is set to launch their Karma drone (Sep 19th). This has now changed, and DJI have sent out press invites for an event on September 27th instead.
This could spell BIG trouble for GoPro who are really counting on the Karma drone to help pull them out of a downward spiral of poorly received products. All initial leaks of the Karma suggest it will be similar in size to a DJI Phantom drone, and really not contain an features that the DJI drone’s have been offering for several years. If the DJI Mavic can deliver specs that are close to the Karma, but in a much more compact design, I certainly know who I’ll be giving my money to!
