Every photographer will need a tripod at some point and it’s an overwhelming decision to make when there are so many options. Some cheap tripods can actually be a hindrance because photographers believe they are getting a stable platform when they aren’t. Another common problem is that people end up with a tripod that is too small, and therefore two uncomfortable to use, or too heavy and therefore too cumbersome to carry. These experiences leave a bad taste in their mouths with regards to tripod usage, and they tend never to want to use one again. High-end tripods such...Read More

A couple of days ago we speculated that Profoto were about to launch a new flash called the A1, based on a page that was added to a French Profoto dealer’s website. We guessed, based on the A1 name, that the product was a smaller flash than the B2. I wasn’t able to pull the cached version of the French page after it was taken down, but thankfully the folks at diyphotography.net picked up the mantle and continued on where my technical skills failed. Not only did they manage to grab the full cached page, they also found a...Read More
We believe that Profoto is getting ready to announce a new small flash called the A1. They have recently been teasing a new kind of product, first reported by Lightingrumors.com, and now a French Profoto dealer appears to have added a page to their site (since removed) which references an A1 flash. Sadly the content was not cached by Google in time for us to get a closer look. Our own investigations show us that the presumed product page for the A1 on the Profoto website sends you to a login page: https://profoto.com/us/a1 If you try to pick a random...Read More
The previously rumoured 85mm f/1.4 L IS lens has officially been launched this evening, and at the rather surprising price of $1600. This is a couple of hundred dollars less than the Canon35mm f/1.4 II that was launched last year, and that lens didn’t have image stabilization. We can only assume that Canon are feeling the pressure from Sigma and Tamron who have both stepped up their lens game considerably in recent years. As expected, Canon unveiled the EOS M100 which promises to be their smallest mirrorless camera yet, and the first with Dual Pixel AF technology. No real surprises here since Canon’s leaky ship gave us all the details last week, although I am a fan of the updated styling in the black model now that I see higher resolution images of it. Shipping in November for $599. Canon new series of tilt-shift macro lenses were officially unveiled (to nobody’s surprise) this evening, with the only real piece of new information being the $2199 USD price point. This brings Canon’s tilt-shift lens series up to five lenses now, with the inclusion of the 17mm TS-E and the 24mm TS-E II. The OM-D E-M10 III launch will be coming soon, and it looks like we can expect a new PRO lens to compliment it, in the form of the previously rumoured 17mm f/1.2. The first PRO lens in this new lineup was the 25mm f/1.2, and there are also rumblings of a 45m PRO coming at a later date. It’s unclear to us who was the original source of this image. Potentially it was 43rumors, or perhaps the Russian website, DPhotoWorld.net. Hat tip to whoever was the Olympus 17mm...Read More
