PHOTO LEAK: Olympus 17mm f/1.2 PRO Lens

The OM-D E-M10 III launch will be coming soon, and it looks like we can expect a new PRO lens to compliment it, in the form of the previously rumoured 17mm f/1.2. The first PRO lens in this new lineup was the 25mm f/1.2, and there are also rumblings of a 45m PRO coming at a later date. It’s unclear to us who was the original source of this image. Potentially it was 43rumors, or perhaps the Russian website, Hat tip to whoever was the Olympus 17mm...

Nikon D850 Release Date: August 24th?

Nikon posted teasers for the D850 on all their social media accounts yesterday, and the latest theory is that this new full-frame behemoth of a camera will launch on August 24th. At this point we have seen many photos, and all the camera specifications, so it’s not quite as exciting as it might have been if Nikon’s ship hadn’t been quite so leaky, but we’re still waiting to hear confirmed pricing and actual shipping details. It is currently suggested that the camera will begin to ship in mid-September. Via:...

Sigma Updates 24-70 ART Firmware and Dock

Sigma has updated the firmware for the Canon version of the 24-70 f/2.8 OIS ART, as well as the calibration dock. Apparently the OS system was not working correctly when these two products were paired together. Details from Sigma: We would like to announce that a firmware update for the SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Art for SIGMA and CANON, as well as a firmware update for the SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11 SA-E and EF-E is now available. This firmware update corrects the phenomenon that the OS mechanism does not operate properly when attached to the SIGMA...

Canon CN-E 70-200 T4.4 L IS KAS Leaks Ahead of Launch

UPDATE: Ooops, B&H posted their video about the lens too early. Canon are set to launch a new CN-E 70-200 t4.4 L IS KAS lens at NAB this week, to compliment the 18-80 t4.4 L IS KAS that was launched last year. What’s unclear at this point is whether the lens will cover a full frame sensor, or only a super-35mm sensor. The 70-200mm focal range has always been used in full frame lenses, so it would be a considerable departure from the norm if this lens was restricted to a smaller image circle. If the lens covers a...

More Patents for Canon CN-E “Super Zoom” Cinema Lenses

When Canon launched the original C300 video camera they also jumped head-on into the world of cine lenses with the CN-E 14.5-60 T2.6 and the CN-E 30-300 T2.95-3.6. These have since been followed by a variety of zoom and prime lenses, and every one of them has been met with high praise from people in the industry, with lenses like the 30-300mm becoming a staple addition to aerial filming units, and the insane 50-1000mm taking the top spot in natural history film units for people like the BBC and National Geographic. Lenses with gigantic zoom ranges are not uncommon...

Canon Patented Three More Apodization Prime Lenses – 24mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4 and 50mm f/2

It has previously been widely reported that Canon patented a lens design for a 135mm f/2 focal length that includes an apodization filter (APD), much like the Sony G Master 100mm f/2.8 lens that was launched just last week. In fact, Canon seems to have taken things more seriously than that and we can exclusively reveal today that they also hold patents for three additional lenses that include apodization (APD) filters: A 50mm f/2 APD, a 35mm f/1.4 APD and a 24mm f/1.4 APD. All of the lenses are EF (full frame) lenses. An apodization filter is essentially a circular graduated...

What Is an Apodization (APD) Filter in a Camera Lens?

An apodization filter is a graduated neutral density filter that sits inside the back of a lens, and helps to smooth out the transitions in out-of-focus highlights or “bokeh balls”. Whilst the effect is most obviously seen in these highlight areas, as you can see from the Sony example below, the filter also causes a general smoothing of all OOF background areas. In short, if you want awesome, creamy looking bokeh, a lens with an APD filter is the way to go. So why haven’t we seen more of these lenses then, if they produce such a generally desirable...

Nikon Granted New Patent For 24-70mm f/2.8E PF ED (Phase Fresnel)

Nikon was first granted a patent for a 24-70 f/2.8 PF lens back in September of 2014, but since then the only PF lens to come to market was the 300mm f/4E PF ED VR PF. PF Lenses feature what Nikon is calling a Phase Fresnel lens element, or Diffractive Optics as others like Canon are calling it. If you’re not familiar with the technology, you can read our knowledge base article entitled: What are Diffractive Optics? Although new developments around the technology seem to be slow, as they have been with Canon DO lenses, it’s no surprise to see...
