Olympus Patents Series of new Full Frame Lenses

A series of patents have been published describing a range of new Olympus full-frame prime lenses. The patent includes optical formula for the following units:

  • 17mm f/1.4
  • 25mm f/1.4 (8m barrel length)
  • 25mm f/1.4 (13cm barrel length)
  • 28mm f/1.4
  • 35mm f/1.4
  • 50mm f/1.4

Olympus has previously filed patents for a number of f/2.0 full frame lenses, but other than the patents themselves, there is no solid evidence that Olympus are currently seriously pursuing the release of full frame system. I would speculate that if they were indeed looking at re-entering the full frame market that they would do so with a mirrorless camera, rather than a DSLR. Already having a positive reputation in the mirrorless market would offer Olympus some purchase they simply would not gain if they were to attempt to compete with the likes of Nikon and Canon in the full framer DSLR world.
