Nikon Patents 2-Layer Sensor

Nikon Patents 2-Layer Sensor

Nikon has filed a patent for a 2-layer camera sensor which would allow for phase-detection on both horizontal and vertical planes, ‘cross-type’ phase detect autofocus if you will. The patent seems to describe an image sensor with 2 onboard phase detection layers mounted at 90 degrees to each other. Eliminating the requirement for a a dedicated AF sensor, whilst still being able to achieve wide ranging cross-point coverage would be a huge advantage for future mirrorless cameras; They would be able to achieve excellent AF sensor coverage compared to current cameras.
