LEAK: Full Specs and Leaked Images of the Canon G1X Mark III

Canon leaks generally follow the exact same pattern these days, almost like clockwork. Roughly 10 days before a release we see a confirmed spec list and some pricing info, and about 5 days before the release the first few images come, rapidly followed by a second set of images. Here’s a conspiracy for you… it this planned? The solid leaks of actual translated specs and photos always come from the same two Japanese sources…

Anyway … ;)

We’ve had a few specifications for the G1X Mark III recently, but now we have the full list, and a set of photos. The camera is a huge design departure from the previous G1X cameras, and essentially looks like an EOS M5 with a fixed lens on it. The camera does indeed have an APS-C sensor in it, a swivel touch-screen on the back, an EVF and a built in 24-70 (equiv.) lens. Rumored pricing is $1299 USD, so this is a pretty serious camera! I’m actually pretty excited about this one, and there aren’t a whole lot of other cameras like it on the market. It’s almost, dare I say it – innovative?

Lots of people will say “why would you spend that much money on it, when you could get an M5 and not be limited to a single lens?”. The answer there lies in the compactness of the built-in lens. It appears to be staggeringly small for a 24-70 range. I can’t think of another camera with a sensor this large, and a lens with this range, that could conceivably fit into a medium-sized jacket pocket. If you don’t need interchangeable lenses, and compactness is very important to you, now you’ve got a great option. This would make a brilliant little travel camera, and I’m looking forward to trying it out myself at some point.
