Are the Canon G7X Mark III Photos Fake?

The online photo community was abuzz yesterday when photos of the upcoming Canon G1X Mark III supposedly leaked. These photos depict a camera that is a major departure from Canon’s usual design cues, both in physical design and user interface. Frankly, it also looks too good to be a Canon camera, and this is coming from a guy who shoots Canon!

I can’t say definitively whether these are fake “photos” yet, but what I can tell you is that the two photos on the camera screens are taken from the free photo website, Unsplash.

Here is the wing photo, and here is the pug photo. According to the metadata, the pug photo was taken with a Canon T6 Rebel, and the wing photo was taken with a Panasonic DMC-GX85.

What is additionally suspicious about this is that it would be very unusual for a large brand like Canon to include the logo of another large brand in their advertising materials, yet the KLM logo is clearly visible.

Just recently Canon Italy got themselves in some hot water by using a photo from Unsplash that was taken with a Fuji camera. I find it hard to believe that they would use these photos immediately after the very pubic shaming that they got for that debacle just two weeks ago.

If it’s a fake, it’s a good one because it’s VERY unusual for the entire community to get suckered into these things.
