Sony Patents Contact Lens Based Camera

Sony has filed a patent for a camera which is built into a smart contact lens. The camera includes a zoom lens, micro processor, Wi-Fi antenna and a built in image stabilisation unit. Sony aren’t the first company to investigate smart contact lens technology. Google has worked on an unreleased unit designed to monitor blood sugar levels in people with diabetes, and Samsung has patented a smart lens designed to interact with a mobile phone. The Sony lens is supposedly controlled by movement of the eyelid itself, in a blink to click fashion, with the onboard image stabilization designed...

Canon Q1 Profits Fall by 39%

Canon are reporting a first quarter fall in profits of a huge 39% in 2016. The manufacturer are siting a drop in compact camera and office equipment sales as the prime reason for the fall, which would perhaps explain why there are such fantastic deals on Canon DSLR and printer bundles at the moment. If a drop in compact camera sales is indeed part of the problem Canon is currently facing then unfortunately they only have themselves to blame. Competition in this sector of the market is extremely stiff with cameras like Sony’s RX100 IV and Fuji’s X100T providing...

Ricoh Patent 75mm F/1.4 Lens for 1 Inch Sensors

Ricoh have patented a new lens designed to be used with one inch sensor camera systems. Interestingly some sites are claiming that this indicates that Ricoh will soon be entering into either the 1 inch compact, or 1 inch mirrorless market (Ricoh’s current camera the GR II uses an APS-C sized sensor). A closer look at the patent material however seems to suggest that the lens is actually perhaps destined for an industrial application with the patent stating that the lens would be destined for applications “such as an image input device for machine vision.” As with all interpretations...
