Are the Canon G7X Mark III Photos Fake?

The online photo community was abuzz yesterday when photos of the upcoming Canon G1X Mark III supposedly leaked. These photos depict a camera that is a major departure from Canon’s usual design cues, both in physical design and user interface. Frankly, it also looks too good to be a Canon camera, and this is coming from a guy who shoots Canon! I can’t say definitively whether these are fake “photos” yet, but what I can tell you is that the two photos on the camera screens are taken from the free photo website, Unsplash. Here is the wing photo,...

DJI Mavic Air to be Launched on January 23rd?

DJI posted a teaser video on their YouTube channel today, confirming a new drone will be launched on January 23rd, with the tagline “Adventure Unfolds”. The DJI Mavic is their foldable drone, so it makes sense that this announcement will be a new addition to the Mavic lineup. In the last week or so there has been a lot of online chatter about a new Mavic Air, which is said to be a smaller version of the original Mavic, although still a bit larger than the tiny DJI Spark. The video definitely seems to confirm the Mavic Air rumors,...

VIDEO: How RED Cinema Cameras are Made

I guess we’ve got a bit of a theme here today because earlier I posted a gallery showing how the Leica Noctilux 75mm f/1.25 is made. This time it’s a video from RED Digital Cinema showing how their cameras are made. Hat tip to Planet 5D for unearthing this one....

These Photos Show the Leica Noctilux 75mm f/1.25 Being Made

Leica launched the ludicrously priced Noctilux 75mm f/1.25 ASPH yesterday, and this morning I discovered this set of photos over at B&H Photo. Usually when a new lens is launched, you get the same set of stale lens-on-a-white-background photos, so I thought it would be fun to share this today. This is lens porn at its absolute pinnacle!   You want one don’t you? Yeah… me...

Sony Launches Range of 500mb/s CFast 2.0 Memory Cards

Back in 2012 Nikon and Sony brought the XQD card to the market, which was pitched as the replacement to CF cards. XQD adoption has been pretty slow though, and it’s merely an option on the Nikon D5. Meanwhile, the competitor in the high data rate card stakes has been CFast 2.0. In the stills industry it has seen a similarly slow adoption rate, primarily because current cameras simply don’t need the speeds that are offered by the card. In the cinema industry though, CFast is being rapidly adopted, and it seems as though Sony has had to eat...

Canon 85mm f/1.4 L IS Reviews Begin to Trickle in

The new 85mm f/1.4 L IS is Canon’s most anticipated lens of the year, and with shipments beginning in the last few weeks, the first proper reviews are starting to hit the web. Bryan over at TDP hasn’t quite finished the full review yet, but the image quality comparisons are live and things are looking good. The lens is ,unsurprisingly, considerably sharper than the Canon 85mm f/1.2 L which is a much older design. Interesting for me was by how much it outperformed the highly-regarded 100mm f/2.8 L IS Macro in the corners of the frame. Clearly this lens is optically...

LEAK: Full Specs and Leaked Images of the Canon G1X Mark III

Canon leaks generally follow the exact same pattern these days, almost like clockwork. Roughly 10 days before a release we see a confirmed spec list and some pricing info, and about 5 days before the release the first few images come, rapidly followed by a second set of images. Here’s a conspiracy for you… it this planned? The solid leaks of actual translated specs and photos always come from the same two Japanese sources… Anyway … ;) We’ve had a few specifications for the G1X Mark III recently, but now we have the full list, and a set of...

Think Tank Retrospective Shoulder Bag Review

A shoulder bag is such a useful kind of bag for so many types of photography that I think you’d struggle to find a photographer that doesn’t have at least one in their closet. On the seemingly never-ending quest for the perfect camera bag, everyone ends up trying a shoulder bag at some point. The Retrospective series from Think Tank photo is a mid to high-end collection of shoulder bags that are made from extremely durable sand-washed, DWR coated cotton canvas. They have a timeless retro feel to them that looks even better once they’re worn in, and the...

Benro TSL08CN00 Carbon Tripod Review – Only $120?!

Every photographer will need a tripod at some point and it’s an overwhelming decision to make when there are so many options. Some cheap tripods can actually be a hindrance because photographers believe they are getting a stable platform when they aren’t. Another common problem is that people end up with a tripod that is too small, and therefore two uncomfortable to use, or too heavy and therefore too cumbersome to carry. These experiences leave a bad taste in their mouths with regards to tripod usage, and they tend never to want to use one again. High-end tripods such...

CONFIRMED: Full Profoto A1 Photos and Specs Leaked

A couple of days ago we speculated that Profoto were about to launch a new flash called the A1, based on a page that was added to a French Profoto dealer’s website. We guessed, based on the A1 name, that the product was a smaller flash than the B2. I wasn’t able to pull the cached version of the French page  after it was taken down, but thankfully the folks at picked up the mantle and continued on where my technical skills failed. Not only did they manage to grab the full cached page, they also found a...
